Patient Experience

We pride ourselves on spending time with patients and learning about them. It’s that “little extra time” with patients that often makes the difference in diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

At Bowling Orthopaedics, you will be treated with dignity and respect; you will be communicated with from start to finish; and you will be cared for compassionately by the region’s top orthopaedic experts. To help us optimize your patient experience, please prepare for your appointment in the following ways:

  • Bring a valid photo ID to your appointment.
  • Complete patient forms by clicking here.
  • Call your insurance company to find out about co-pays and other coverage questions. Some insurance carriers require you to have a referral or primary care physician authorization before treatment is given. Please check with your carrier if you are in doubt.
  • Bring your insurance card or other health coverage information.
  • Bring clinic notes or operative reports from your referring physician that relate to your condition.
  • Be prepared to tell your doctor how and when you injured yourself. Jot down any specific details such as what you felt or heard at the time of injury.
  • Bring a list of all medications you are taking, including any over the counter vitamins and supplements.
  • Make a list of questions to ask your doctor.
  • Take notes on what the doctor tells you and ask questions if you don’t understand the meaning of a word or instructions for taking medications.

As someone with a rare orthopedic condition, it was difficult to find a doctor in Wilmington familiar with my disease. I was fortunate to become Dr. Bowling’s patient almost 9 years ago when I needed a hip replacement. Dr. Bowling is one of the kindest, most compassionate doctors I have ever met. He takes the time to consider and understand his patient’s needs and concerns while providing the highest quality medical care. Dr. Bowling’s staff is as dedicated as Dr. Bowling. Physicians Assistants, Ryan and Jay, provide caring and knowledgeable medical attention.
– Adrian M.

Dr. Bowling performed two knee replacements for me 8 years ago. He was extremely thorough, courteous, caring and professional both in the pre-surgery and post-surgical consultations and follow up. I had a speedy recovery and since the surgery I have had almost no pain, I can walk easily, and my quality of life has been vastly improved. I am thankful each day for Dr. Bowling’s talent, skill and overall expertise.
– Brooks P.

Dr. Jack Bowling replaced my right hip (total hip replacement) in November 2005, and repeated the procedure on my left hip in September 2014. Recovery went very well in both surgeries i.e. I could “chip and putt” in 7-10 days and played a round of golf in about 6 weeks. I was very satisfied with the outcome. The pain was gone and flexibility improved.

During the last 12 years, I have experienced a number of anatomical issues to include severe arthritic hip pain, acute knee pain, and a Type II dislocated shoulder. In each instance, I have sought care and received complete relief from Dr. Bowling and his staff. My quality of life has been completely restored with a hip and knee replacement, and cortisone and a restorative exercise plan for my shoulder. The technical competence has resolved my maladies, but further, Dr. Bowling, Ryan and support staff are always pleasant and have worked with me to optimize the positive outcomes.
– Frank C.

I was grateful for my two new hips as I walked and ran after grandkids at the Magic Kingdom and Lego Land two weeks ago. Dr. Bowling replaced both within 5 months of each other (both within the last 2 years). I wasn’t expecting to need them, at 63, but the surgeries changed my life. I went from having constant pain to having no limits. Thanks to his incredible talent I recovered unbelievably quickly, and now have legs that match. He is awesome! I would do it all over again if I had to.

Two years ago I thought I would never be able to ski again because I was in so much pain. I could not even walk in a pair of ski boots never mind ski. This year I’m back on the black diamonds and the bump runs with no pain at all. Thank you so much for giving me back one of my greatest passions. I plan on wearing out not rusting out!!!!!!!
– M. Johnson

Before I saw Dr. Jack, I was on pain meds every day and also on crutches because of severe pain. After surgery I have not taken any pain meds and the small amount of pain I am in is lessoning each day. You gave me my life back!
– Robert F.

Before seeing Dr. Bowling the pain in my knee was a 7-10 on a pain scale for over 4 years. After knee surgery I feel like a woman who’s been in a coma for 4 years and have just woken up to now be able to walk again. Dr. Bowling is a gifted and intelligent surgeon. Ryan Murphy, Dr. Bowling’s PA-C, has answered hundreds of questions with kindness and understanding. Amanda, Ryan’s medical assistant, has always been very encouraging. Dr. Bowling’s office staff, operating room team, and the hospital nurses all have a great respect for Dr. Bowling. I thank God for Dr. Bowling and his talents every day.
– Sheryl F.

I received two knee surgeries this past summer due to having soft tissue damage to both the meniscus and cartilage, each requiring a specific surgical procedure. Dr. Jack Bowling and his staff exceeded my expectations not only in the success of both surgeries, but the professionalism of the staff (even when I was less than easy to deal with at times), and perhaps most importantly their handling of the insurance coverage on my behalf. I highly recommend Bowling Orthopaedics to anyone needing top quality Orthopaedic care.

Journey II XR Bi-cruciate Retaining Knee System

The XR is a new concept in knee replacement surgery. Traditional knee replacement designs did not allow for the preservation of the cruciate ligament (ACL), which in the normal knee is responsible for anterior/posterior stability. Without this knee ligament, traditional knee replacement designs have not been kinematically (how the knee functions) normal.

Specifically, the femur (thigh) bone will translate or shift anteriorly on the tibia (leg) bone causing pain and instability in activities such as stairs, squatting or stooping. This has been shown by the fact that on average only 15 % of total knee replacement patients can squat comfortably.

The XR knee system features an anatomically shaped femur (identical to the traditional Journey II knee options) and a new U-shaped tibial component with a mid section of preserved bone (where the ACL/PCL ) attach. This U shape allows for appropriate resurfacing of the worn tibial cartilage without forcing resection of these critical ligaments.

The technique is identical to traditional knee replacement steps and, therefore, does not add time or difficulty to the standard procedure. Our early experience has shown excellent results with respect to patient outcomes, satisfaction and return to activities.
